The DoE began in 1942 as the Manhattan Project (MED) and established in 1946 as the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), which was split into 2 agencies in 1974, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA). Further centralization and expansion of mandates resulted in the creation of the Department of Energy in 1977. [-JL]
“The U.S. Department of Energy used to be called the Atomic Energy Commission, created in 1946 with David Lilienthal as its first chief and Kuhn,Loeb&Co. partner (USNavy Admiral) Lewis L. Strauss as commissioner. Strauss took the helm in 1953 and ushered the AEC through its 1950s expansion when the greatest intensity of atmospheric testing took place at the Nevada Test Site. He was the man who said that nuclear power was so close to clean and free that it would be ‘too cheap to meter’.
“In 1959, Strauss was US Secretary of Commerce (never confirmed by the Senate)– Seymour Hersh has written that Strauss saw to it that Israel got nuclear technology. John McCone was made AEC chief and later become head of the CIA.”

“About DOE”
The Department of Energy’s overarching mission is to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States; to promote scientific and technological innovation in support of that mission; and to ensure the environmental cleanup of the national nuclear weapons complex, etc.
“History”
The Department of Energy (DOE) has one of the richest and most diverse histories in the Federal Government. Although only in existence for a quarter century, the Department traces its lineage to the Manhattan Project and beyond.
Researchers interested in documenting DOE history are welcome to browse DOE records, including declassified materials on the nuclear weapons program, etc.
