Frank Cilluffo – Director
    …has served as Director of the Homeland Security Policy Institute since joining The George Washington University in April 2003. He is also an Associate Vice President and leads GW’s homeland security efforts on policy, research, education, and training. The Institute’s recent policy and research agenda covers a wide range of national and homeland security matters, including counterterrorism, counter-radicalization & counter-narrative efforts, cyber threats & deterrence, transportation security, CBRN terrorism, intelligence, national resilience, emergency management, and the nexus of crime and terrorism.. Daniel J. Kaniewski - Deputy Director
    Kaniewski re-joined HSPI in August 2008 after spending three years on the White House staff, most recently as Special Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Senior Director for Response Policy. Soon after joining the White House staff in July 2005, he witnessed first hand the failed response to Hurricane Katrina. He then served as a co-author and editor of the White House report The Federal Response to Hurricane Katrina: Lessons Learned. More

Brian E. Engel - Presidential Administrative Fellow
Brian Engel  …joined HSPI in July 2010.  His interests include Middle East security issues, Islamic activism and extremism, insurgency and counterinsurgency, transnational security threats, and U.S. national security decision making.   He currently serves as a Presidential Administrative Fellow at The George Washington University (GW).  Prior to joining HSPI Brian worked in the Institute for National Strategic Studies at National Defense University.  In 2009 he studied Arabic at the Qasid Institute for Classical and Modern Standard Arabic in Amman, Jordan. HSPI’s work resonates with the public and across the policy spectrum. We have hosted Secretaries of Homeland Security Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff on multiple occasions for major policy addresses. We regularly testify before Congressional committees and government commissions on topics such as after-action reforms following Hurricane Katrina. HSPI has also has presented reports on extremism and counter-radicalization efforts before the Senate and House Homeland Security Committees. These reports served as Congress’ framework for multiple oversight hearings in which government policymakers and international subject matter experts were asked to respond.
HSPI staff engage the policy community and public through various publications, speeches, and conference presentations, as well as through the media. We are a leading source of insight and analysis for a variety of national and international media outlets, including major newspapers and television networks. …HSPI is a founding member of the Consortium for Homeland Defense and Security in America, together with the Heritage Foundation, the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the U.S. Army War College, and co-hosts the annual Threats at our Threshold symposium.
